In partnership with the Braille Club of Palm Beach County, the City of Boynton Beach will hold a White Cane Safety Awareness event at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 23. Dozens of blind and sighted individuals will cross the intersection at Woolbright Road and Federal Highway multiple times. The goal is to educate local drivers about the White Cane Safety Law. The group will use sighted guides, audible crossing signals, guide dogs and canes as they cross in the crosswalks. The Boynton Beach Police Department will assist.

October is Blind Awareness Month. Globally, more than 2 billion people have vision impairment, according to the World Health Organization

By law, a person using a white cane or guide dog always has the right of way in traffic (FL Statute 316.1301).

The group will meet at the Braille Club, 1240 Federal Hwy., and walk to PNC Bank, 1520 Federal Highway, before crossing.
