[ARCHIVED] Catch the Newest Kinetic Art in Downtown Boynton

To honor and celebrate Boynton Beach’s long history of charter and recreational saltwater fishing, BoyntonArts commissioned six local artists to transform fiberglass sailfish mounts into unique works of art. On Thursday, March 30 (5:30 pm – 7:30 pm), the City will host an Unveiling and Artist Reception at the Boynton Harbor Marina’s Marina Café (100 NE 6th St.) where the public is invited to meet these artists and view all six painted sculptures at this free community event. Light refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar will be available.

During the first three week of April 2023, the sailfish will be displayed in the lobby of Boynton Beach City Hall (100 E. Ocean Ave.). On Monday, April 24, the art will then be placed atop tall poles on sculpture bases along East Ocean Ave, a display which will serve to visually link City Hall with the Marina. For the next two years, the sailfish displays will join more than 20 additional outdoor artworks in Downtown Boynton, providing for a pleasant ¼ mile arts experience for all to enjoy.

To make these sailfish, artists from Palm Beach and Martin counties transformed fiberglass, with paint and a variety of other techniques, resulting in art that reflects realism, storytelling, expressionism, printmaking and design. Artists include:

• Turgo Bastien, Royal Beach Palm

• Andrea Canham, Stuart

• Tom D’Auria, Lake Worth Beach

• Michelle Drummond, Delray Beach

• Etheard Joseph, Jupiter

• Joseph Velasquez, Lantana

“The spinning sailfish will add to Downtown Boynton’s reputation as one of Florida’s premier outdoor walking art destinations for sculpture, murals, historic buildings and our international collection of kinetic art,” said Glenn Weiss, the City’s Public Art Manger.

This project is sponsored by the Boynton Beach Public Art Fund, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts.  For more information, call 561-742-6026.
