Paper Dresses by Artist Sonya Sanchez Arias, Boca Raton, Florida

Born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago, Sonya is a successful photographic stylist, commercial photographer, and photographic art director for more than 28 years. Her art follows the “up-cycling and repurposing” movement, which reevaluates the worth of waste by reclaiming and reinterpreting the beauty of discarded materials and found objects in new and unexpected ways. All of Sonya’s mixed media assemblages and art jewelry are handmade one-of-a-kind pieces, the recycled materials that she manipulates gives her mixed media work a strong identity with unique characteristics effectively making each piece a distinct work of art.

“Mother Earth” by Sonya Sanchez Arias

“Hopefully when you look closely at these dresses they will inspire you to think of the “possibilities” of recycling plastics and other materials. Reminding you that many of the used materials that would ordinarily be thoughtlessly discarded, have the potential to be repurposed and transformed into something really beautiful with an entirely new reason for existing” – Sonya Sanchez Arias

“I am driven by the idea of transforming trash into one-of-a- kind designs of wearable art. The designs are the product of reusing and repurposing rubber from car and bike inner tubes, plastic from bags and containers, as well as paper and silk from neckties.”  - Aidana Baldassarre
