COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Historical Note: William P. Beck (1931-2018) established Star Publishing in June 1961, and started publishing The Boynton Beach Star in July 1961. It was published weekly and featured local news stories and columns. Long-term staff and columnists include Associate Editor Vernon Lamme, columnists Cavie White and Lori Culver, and photographer Stan Sheets. The newspaper was named by the Florida Press Association as the best small weekly newspaper in the state of Florida in 1968 and in 1967 the “mail-north showcase edition” won a Florida Press Association award as the outstanding advertising promotion by a weekly newspaper. William Beck sold the Boynton Beach Star and the Deerfield Beach Observer on 1 September 1968 and its last issue was published 26 September 1968 (Vol. 8, Number 12). Star Press continued operating and printed many of the high school newspapers in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Scope and Content Note: Files of 2,123 photographs and some clippings, published in the Boynton Beach Star. Includes chiefly portraits, group portraits, and locations to illustrate news stories. Most of the photographs are by Stan Sheets. Also includes some photographs labeled “Prison” which may not have been published in the Boynton Beach Star, but may have been used by Star Press.

Arrangement Note: Arranged alphabetically, original order maintained. However, files may have been rearranged before donation, as clippings were not consistently filed with photos. Whenever possible, clippings featuring a photograph have been paired with the photograph or publication date is written on back.
