COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Historical Note: George Seegitz (c. 1882-c1966) served in the Spanish-American war c. 1900-1903. His career focused on music, musical theater, and song writing. He lived in Cleveland, Ohio and Boynton Beach, Florida. In later life, he carved in wood and plexiglass and exhibited them in his home, Casa Artistica, on SE 5th Avenue at Seacrest Avenue, Boynton Beach, Florida. George Seegitz married Harriet Dittman (1886-1965) in 1907 and came to Boynton in 1929. Harriet Seegitz belonged to many local organizations, including the Boynton Woman’s Club, Needlecraft Club, Book Club, and Garden Club.

Scope and Content Note: Chiefly George Seegitz's Spanish American war medals, and supporting documents, and Harriet Seegitz's photographs, chiefly of local clubs in the 1930s, including the needlecraft club. Also includes two stamps, the California Gold Centennial for 3 cents (worth about 45 cents in 2020), and the US 1 and a half cent with Martha Washington (worth about 20 cents in 2020).

Custodial History: Material collected by a niece of George Seegitz, Mrs. Donald R. Smith of Delray Beach. Collection came to Boynton Beach City Library from the Boynton Beach Historical Society. Some photographs noted as being in collection are missing.
