Restriction on access: The collection is available for supervised use by appointment during normal Boynton Beach City Library hours. Users are required to comply with the library’s regulations governing use.

The Boynton Beach City Library adheres to all conditions specified in the law when providing reproductions of copyrighted material. Custodial history: Most items from the Boynton Beach Historical Society (2016.022). Items were not in original order; an attempt was made to reorganize according t department of origin.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Historical Note: 

Historical Note: The town of Boynton was established in 1920. The town was split in 1931, with the land east of the Intracoastal becoming “Boynton Beach” while the original town, west of the Intracoastal remained “Boynton.” In 1938, “Boynton Beach,” east of the Intracoastal became “Ocean Ridge.” In 1941, the town of “Boynton” became the “City of Boynton Beach.”

The Police Department, originally one “Town Marshall,” was established in 1920. The Fire Department was organized as a Volunteer Fire Department in 1925. The Recreation Department was created in 1955.

Scope and Content Note: 

Chiefly historical records generated by departments of the City of Boynton Beach.

Includes accounting ledgers, occupational licenses, tax receipts, and abstracts of titles created by the Finance Department (1921-1953); awards and certificates given to the City by organizations; original ordinance books; historical records from the Police and Fire Departments; Historic Preservation Department records, including material on the Historic Sites Survey project (1996); publicity printed materials for the Art in Public Places, Park and Recreation and other Departments; records from special event committees, including the Centennial Committee (1995), Time Capsule (1972), Bicentennial time capsule and scrapbook (1976); awards and gifts to the City; newsclipping press books (1961-1964); Park and Recreation department clipping scrapbooks (1961-1976) and photoalbums (1977-1978); marketing department photographs (chiefly unidentified events, unknown date); city event phot (1985-2011); cemetery maps; and videos of City events and BBTV reports.
