The Miss Boynton Beach Pageant began in 1964, initially sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and directed by the Junior Women’s Club; later the pageant was affiliated only with the Junior Women’s Club. Contestants in the Miss Boynton Beach Pageant were sponsored by local civic organizations. Qualifications for entrants specified that the girls must be 18 to 28 years old, a high school graduate, and a resident in Boynton Beach or neighboring communities for at least six months. Entrants were to be “of good character” and have never been married. They were to possess the qualities of intelligence, poise, personality, charm, and beauty. Each contestant performed a three minute talent routine which could include singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, dramatic presentation, art display, dress designing, or a talk on their future career. The competitors were judged in three categories: swimsuits, evening gowns, and talent.
Prizes for the winners included a scholarship and a trip to compete in the Miss Florida Pageant held in June. There were first through fourth runners-up and a Miss Congeniality, all of whom won prize, chiefly a scholarship or savings bonds.
The Miss Boynton Beach pageant replaced the Miss Gulfstream Mermaid pageant, which was also sponsored by the Chamber and was tied to a fishing tournament.
