Employee Benefits

We believe City employees to be our most valuable assets. To attract and retain the best employees, we offer a competitive salary and benefits package including training, educational assistance, performance appraisal and merit programs.  

Full-time employees (those regularly scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week) are eligible for the City's benefit package. The City provides employees with health insurance benefits through CIGNA HealthCare. The City pays the entire premium for each eligible employee. The employee may elect to cover a spouse and/or dependent children by paying the applicable premium for the dependent(s).

Coverage is provided through Cigna. Premiums for eligible employees are paid by the City. Premiums for any covered dependent are paid by the employee with a contribution by the City.

The City provides each eligible employee with term life and accidental death insurance.

Employees may purchase supplemental term life insurance on an individual-choice basis with premiums based on age. A matching amount of Accidental Death insurance may also be purchased.

Employees who select supplemental coverage for themselves may also purchase coverage for their spouse and dependent children.

The City has pension plans for general employees, police and firefighters. Each plan is contributory with both the employee and the City contributing to the program.

The short term disability plan may help provide a source of income if you become disabled due to a sickness or off the job injury. Based on income, the plan will pay for up to 90 days with no wait for an accident or a seven day wait for an illness. Other supplemental plans provide direct cash payments regardless of any other coverage you may have, and are designed to help fill in any gaps in a medical plan. The employee pays the premiums for these supplemental plans.

The City provides long Term Disability insurance to eligible employees with no waiting period. The plan is designed to cover a disability sustained on or off the job.

The City contracts with an employee assistance program (EAP) to provide employees and their dependents with free, confidential and professional counseling to help resolve personal or family problems.

The City makes available three deferred compensation plans that the employee may voluntarily contribute to on a tax-deferred basis.

All full-time employees accrue time toward paid vacation leave. Accrual begins immediately and vacation may be taken after six months of employment.

Eligible full-time employees earn bonus vacation hours throughout the year if they are not absent from work for illness or for certain other absences.

The City observes 11 paid holidays throughout the year.

Full-time employees accrue one day of sick leave per month. An employee may elect to use up to 5 days per year of accrued sick time for illness in his/her immediate family.

*(Depending on available budget funding) The Tuition Assistance Program reimburses eligible employees for successful completion of approved courses leading to Associate, Bachelors and graduate degrees.

The City offers continuing classes for professional development. Topics include computer programs, supervisory and management skills and as well as workshops and seminars on a wide variety of topics.

The City has a gym facility equipped with a wide variety of exercise machines in the main City Hall building. The gym is open 24 hours a day. Employees and spouses may join for a small fee.

Employees may choose to enroll in a prepaid legal service plan and an identity theft protection plan. The employee pays the premiums for these plans.

All City employees may join the Credit Union of Palm Beach County. In addition to savings and checking accounts, the Credit Union offers different types of loans, investment choices and recreational opportunities.

Section 125 of the Internal Revenue code allows you to have your dependent coverage premiums deducted before payroll taxes are withheld resulting in tax savings to you.

Employees may participate in flexible spending accounts for reimbursement of medical and/or dependent care expenses.

Employees may have their bi-weekly paycheck deposited to the financial institution of their choice.

The City matches the employee's contribution to the federal Social Security and Medicare funds.

The City of Boynton Beach also proudly participates in the Let’s Move: Commit to Change Physical Activity challenge - a county-wide initiative that focuses on physical activity, nutrition and healthy behaviors. Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc. sponsors the annual challenge, which takes place throughout the month of March. The City of Boynton Beach has participated in the Palm Healthcare Foundation’s Let’s Move challenge since 2013. For the past four years, the City’s results have earned us top placements in the countywide competition.  

If you participate in sustained physical activity for only 30 minutes a day, you can improve your health dramatically. Regular physical activity can make a lasting change in health because it decreases the risk for obesity and provides other surprising benefits, such as improved mental health, mood, and sleep quality.
