Due to the overwhelming response of applicants for the C.A.R.E.S. Program, the Fire Department has placed a temporary hold on accepting applications at this time. The Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Department's Explorers Program is a free program designed for young adults between the ages of 14 – 17 who are interested in learning about a career in fire service.

Fire Explorers will  gain a comprehensive understanding of the fire service, train with Fire Department Officers, participate in community service projects, City events, competitions, fundraisers and much more!

The Fire Explorer program is phase one of the Boynton Beach Fire Rescue C.A.R.E.S Program, those enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to advance to the Cadet Program (ages 18 -21) and be eligible for scholarship opportunities for both basic Fire Certifications and EMT/Paramedic School. 

During this program Explorers will learn:

•        Teamwork, Self-Confidence and Leadership Skills
•        Forcible Entry, Search and Rescue and Ladder Training
•        Ropes and Knots, Hose, Tools, Strategies and Tactics
•        CPR, Stop the Bleed and EMS First Aid Skills & more! 

Each year the Explorers will participate in Firematics competitions that take place in Daytona Beach during the Annual Fire Service Leadership Weekend and the Fire Rescue East conference sponsored by the Florida Fire Chiefs Association

The Explorers program will begin October of 2022, meetings will take place two Wednesday each month from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Station #5 (2080 High Ridge Road) and periodically when additional City events and activities are scheduled.

Acceptance Criteria for the Explorers Program is as follows: 

  • Must be between 14 - 17 years of age or a Senior in High School
  • Must be a Boynton Beach resident
  • Maintain a 2.5 GPA
  • No Criminal Record
  • Maintain 50% or greater Attendance (Detail & Ride Requirement)
  • Participate in City Events
  • Perform Community Service by attending Street Cleanups, Fire Station Open Houses and City, Fundraising and Public Education events. 

Explorers will endure real life training on skills that are required for a successful career in the fire service. Skills include:

  • EMS/Paramedic Skills 
  • CPR Training  
  • Physical Fitness/Mental Health
  • Fireground Strategies & Tactics
  • Ropes, Knots & Tying Tools
  • Hydrant & Hose Training
  • Proper Use of Lifesaving Tools
  • Communications
  • Donning/Doffing Fire Gear & SCBA Bottles
  • Forcible Entry
  • Public Fire Education
  • Sprinkler System Fundamentals
  • Building Construction
  • Completing Incident Reports
  • Fire Cause  & Origin
  • Water Supply 
  • Special Rescue & more! 

Explorers will be monitored for their proficiency in tasks and coached in areas of improvement. In addition, they will be recognized for outstanding performance, displays of leadership and performance. 

Explorers will be eligible for the following awards:

  • Explorer of the Year
  • Humanitarian Award
  • Perfect Attendance
  • Leadership Skills
  • Most Improved 
  • Squad/Unit Citations for Service

In addition, Explorers will be eligible to achieve rank based on the Fire Department Rank Structure. 

Ranks are as follows: 

  • Battalion Leader
  • Unit Captain (2nd in Command)
  • Squad Lieutenants/Leaders 

Explorers who have achieved proper training may be eligible to participate in the BBFR Ride-along Program, which matches qualified Explorers with career firefighters. The Ride-along program allows members to go on calls and gain hands on exposure to the skills and responsibilities needed for a career in fire service. 

The Explorers program will begin October of 2022, meetings will take place two Wednesday each month from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Station #5 (2080 High Ridge Road) and periodically when additional City events and activities are scheduled. 

Explorers will receive training from certified instructors of the Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Department such as the Fire Chief, Assistant Chiefs, Battalion Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Firefighter's and Fire & Life Safety team members. 

Explorers will be issued the following equipment

  • Fire Department Explorer Uniforms (shirt, BDU pants, hat and Class A shirt)
  • Bunker Coat, Pants & Boots
  • Fire Helmet, Gloves & Hood
  • Utility Rope & Work Gloves
  • Ear & Eye Protection

Explorers will receive a training booklet outlining necessary requirements for proficiency in assigned skills along with a rules and regulations manual outlining the code of conduct and privacy disclosures.
