Starting a Business in Boynton Beach

Looking to start or relocate your business to Boynton Beach? Any business and/or professional, including home-based businesses, that provide services or perform work within the City of Boynton Beach city limits will need to obtain a Business Tax Receipt (BTR) and a Certificate of Use and Occupancy (COU).

A Business Tax Receipt and Certificate of Occupancy and Use are intended to protect consumers and help entrepreneurs when starting a business by verifying:

  • Your business is allowed to operate in the zoning district where it is located. This is most helpful before signing a lease.
  • The structure was built for your proposed type of business.
  • Any environmental requirements associated with your business are met. 
  • All life safety and regulatory parameters are met.

  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration) 
  • State License from FDACS for Automotive Repair                                                        
  • Copy of Commercial Lease

Regulatory Agency: Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

  • COBB Application for each business and each professional
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration)
  • License from DPBR or Palm Beach County Certification for each contractor
  • Copy of Commercial Lease

Regulatory Agency: Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR)

Submittal Requirements

  • COBB Application for medical office and personnel.                                          
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration). 
  • Medical license from ACHA for entities where health care services are provided to individuals and which tender charges for reimbursement for such services.
  • License from State Regulatory Agency for licensed medical professionals.                                                              
  • Copy of Commercial Lease

Regulatory Agency:  Florida Dept. of Health Agency for Healthcare Administration

  • COBB Application for Salon Establishment and licensed professionals.                                                                                    
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration). 
  • Establishment license from DBPR/Florida Board of Massage Therapy.                                                              
  • License from State Regulatory Agency for licensed professionals (I.E message therapist, cosmetologist, full specialist, etc.  
  • Copy of Commercial Lease.                                      
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS Sheets if applicable).

Regulatory Agency:  Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) Florida Board of Massage Therapy

  • COBB Application for company
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration)
  • Home Healthcare license from AHCA
  • Copy of Commercial Lease       

Regulatory Agency: Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA)

  • COBB Application for attorney and company     
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration)
  • Florida Bar license for each attorney
  • Copy of Commercial Lease

Regulatory agency: The Florida Bar

  • COBB Application for the business         
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration)
  • Copy of Commercial Lease.                              
  • COBB Application for broker professional and company
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration)
  • DBPR license for company and broker
  • Broker associates and sales associates are exempt
  • Copy of Commercial Lease

  • State License from DBPR for the restaurant
  • Copy of Commercial Lease

Regulatory Agencies: Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR)
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services regulates other food service establishments such as prepackaged foods, retail, wholesale/manufactured, and medical marijuana treatment center edibles.

  • COBB Application for the business
  • Copy of Sunbiz (Corporation and/or Fictitious Name Registration)
  • Copy of Commercial Lease                        

Most businesses will need, if applicable, these documents when filling our your BTR and COU application:

  • A copy of your lease if you are leasing commercial space
  • If you operate under a fictitious name (also known as a “doing business as” or “dba”), a copy of your Fictious Name Registration with SunBiz
  • If the business is a corporation, LLC or partnership, copies of any corporate documents from SunBiz
  • If your trade or profession is regulated by another federal, state or local agency: A copy of your registration, certification or license
