Before the main event, the community is also invited at 8 a.m. to participate in a Day of Service neighborhood cleanup. There is no RSVP required, and no supplies are needed. Participants can meet at the Carolyn Sims Center. Coffee and donuts will be provided. Community service hours are available.
At 1 p.m. Emcee Rod Z will kick off the main event with the National Anthem sung by Elticia Buisson and presentation of colors by a combined honor guard from the Boynton Beach Police Department and Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Department, followed by an invocation by Boynton Beach City Commissioner Woodrow L. Hay.
Children can participate in the Hero Face-off, which will pit Boynton Beach police officers and firefighters against each other in a series of fun races. Other children’s activities include bounce houses, crafts, games, face painting, glitter tattoos and a Police Athletic League basketball tournament. There will be step, dance and cheer team, as well as a drumline performance.
There will be a track & field event sponsored by Healthier Boynton Beach featuring hula hooping, a kangaroo hop, backward crabwalk, a 50-yard dash, a shuttle run and basketball around the world. City departments and non-profit organizations will showcase their community services in fun and interactive ways. Participating agencies include Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc., the Boynton Beach City Library, Boynton Beach Mental Health Committee, Brain Matters Research, Christa McAuliffe SWAT, the City Clerk's Office, Boynton Beach Fire Rescue & Division of Fire & Life Safety, Genesis Community Health, the Girl Scouts, Gospel Fellowship, Healthier Boynton Beach, Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Palm Tran, Pathways to Prosperity, Boynton Beach Recreation & Parks, the Schoolhouse Children's Museum, Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, the South Palm Beach County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., St. John Community Promise and Utilities & Sustainability Department.
Parking is available at Carolyn Sims Center, 225 N.W. 12th Ave., Sara Sims Park, 209 N.W. 9th Ave. and on 9th Avenue, east of the park.
The MLK Classic Basketball Tournament will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 13 at the Ezell Hester Jr. Center, 1901 N. Seacrest Blvd. Semi-pro teams will come to Boynton Beach to participate in this tournament that will celebrate unity, togetherness and brotherhood. This free event will feature stars like Glen Rice Jr., Darius Washington, Carl Jones and more as they dribble, dunk and dazzle on the court. Bring your friends for an electrifying day of hoops.
