Borovy award winnerThe City of Boynton Beach Education & Youth Advisory Board proudly announces Wachabie Alincy as the winner of the 11th annual “Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year” Award.  Ms. Alincy was presented with a $1,000 check and recognized at the May 18 City Commission Meeting, and will have her name placed on the permanent plaque at City Hall.

The award was created in 2000 to recognize a graduating high school senior who best epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism and giving to the community exemplified by the late Bob Borovy.  A United States Veteran and former Advisory Board on Children and Youth board member, Mr. Borovy was an active citizen of the Boynton Beach community for many years.

High school seniors are nominated by three adults and write an essay on what they have learned from performing volunteer community service.  The winner must be of good moral character, have done significant volunteer work and made significant contributions to his/her community.

The award is funded through the American Legion Post 164, private donations and the City of Boynton Beach.

She was a member of the Arts Club as well as a peer counselor.  Additionally she served as an office assistant, a blood donor, a member of the HIV/AIDS Awareness Summit and Kaleidoscope.  During her high school career, she was captain of the Girl’s Weightlifting Team, 1st place winner of the Brain Bowl and placed 2nd in the county for the Foreign Language Fair.  In addition, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Girls Flag Football Team, Spanish Club and French Club, among others.  Ms. Alincy plans to study Biology at Palm Beach State College and the University of South Florida.

A second place award of $300 was presented to Alexis Wooley who graduated from Park Vista High School’s JFK Medical Science Academy.  She was an active member of the Health Occupations Students of America Club and co-chaired the Community Blood Center’s blood drives on campus.  She is a Girl Scout, in the process of earning the Gold Award (the highest award that can be earned as a Girl Scout) and volunteered consistently through her church and the school.  Ms. Wooley will study Nursing at the University of South Florida.  For more information, please call 742-6224.

V.I.P. Program (Very Important People)

Enjoy a rewarding experience by becoming involved in our community to help others.
Join the V.I.P. Volunteer Program. The Senior Center is always looking for volunteers who would like to help and volunteers are welcome at all of the other recreation facilities.

Specifically, volunteers are the backbone of the Senior Center. They help out in areas such as registration, classes, programs, special events and the Congregate Meal Program.  Not only are they volunteers, they are participants!  Each year, the Recreation and Parks Department thanks the volunteers with an Awards Banquet.

If you would like to be a volunteer at the Senior Center or at any recreation center, call Recreation Specialist Ann Forster at (561) 742-6570. All volunteers are required to go through a national background check.

How to Join:
Download, fill out and submit a membership form (58 kb PDF). Keep track of your volunteer hours throughout the year. Periodic volunteer opportunities may also be organized by the Recreation & Parks Department.

There are many benefits: Help those in need; learn new skills; gain work experience and career contacts; be an active member of your community; increase self-esteem and sense of responsibility; make new friends and have fun!

An awards ceremony is held each May to recognize volunteers who turn in hours. All participants receive a certificate and individual recognition. Since 1998, youth volunteers have recorded almost 53,000 volunteer hours, and the program has awarded over $21,000 in savings bonds and prizes!

This program is made possible through a cooperative effort between the City of Boynton Beach Recreation & Parks Department, the Education & Youth Advisory Board and local business and individual sponsors. For more information, please call 561-742-6224.
