2009 "Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year"

Samantha Lee Rivera accepting Borovy Award The City of Boynton Beach Education & Youth Advisory Board proudly announces Samantha Lee Rivera as the winner of the 10th annual "Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year" Award.  Ms. Rivera was presented with a $1,000 check at the May 19 City Commission Meeting, and will have her name placed on the permanent plaque at City Hall.

The award was created in 2000 to recognize a graduating high school senior who best epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism and giving to the community exemplified by the late Bob Borovy.  A United States Veteran and former Advisory Board on Children and Youth board member, Mr. Borovy was an active citizen of the Boynton Beach community for many years.

High school seniors are nominated by three adults and write an essay on what they have learned from performing volunteer community service.  The winner must be of good moral character, have done significant volunteer work and made significant contributions to his/her community.

The award is funded through the American Legion Post 164, private donations and the City of Boynton Beach.

Ms. Rivera graduated from South Tech Academy with a cumulative GPA of 3.32.  Her community service includes working with Kindergarten children at the Forest Park Elementary School SACC (school age child care) Program, serving as a mentor for the Forest Park Beacon Center teen program, counselor in training at the Wildlife Loxahatchee Summer Camp program, various activities with the Girl Scouts and volunteering at her church, "Our Lady Queen of Peace" Catholic Church.  Ms. Rivera will study graphic design at Digital Media Arts College in Boca Raton.

A second place award of $300 was presented to Cassandra Rosa who graduated third in her class from Lake Worth Christian School.  She conducts music therapy for the children at Royal Palm School and is active in her church, Calvary Chapel Boynton Beach, where she plays guitar during services and for the youth group.  She has also participated in missions trips in the United States and abroad.
