Commit 2B Fit
The City of Boynton Beach has become a Commit 2B Fit community. In his Proclamation, presented at a recent City Commission meeting, Mayor Jerry Taylor said, "The intention of the Commit 2B Fit Community Program is to affect positive change in children and families, promote increased physical activity and better nutrition in the community, and to create habits that can lead to a healthier life for all involved."

Commit 2B Fit is a non-profit organization working to combat childhood obesity and to promote overall wellness. By becoming a Commit 2B Fit community, Boynton Beach will take part in an effort to promote physical activity and making healthy food choices; providing incentives for accomplishments; and sending this message to families through educational outreach and collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, schools and recreation programs.

Plans call for the City's Recreation & Parks Dept. to participate in the Commit 2B Fit after-school program, which involves maintaining a nine-week journal that helps children set goals and track nutrition and physical activity.

Highlights
Ways Children Benefit from Recreation Activities and Time Spent in Nature

It costs approximately $30,000 to incarcerate a juvenile offender for one year.  If that money were being spent on the child through recreation and parks programs offered by the Boynton Beach Recreation & Parks Department we could:

• Enroll him in 10 months of an after-school program
• Enroll him in twenty-four weeks of visual art classes
• Enroll him in eight weeks of summer camp
• Let him participate in one fishing clinic
• Invite him and his family to three special family events
• Sign him up for a counselor in training program that lasts throughout the school year
• Allow him to participate in five months of martial arts training
• Enroll him in a six week junior lifeguard program
• Provide him with five private tennis lessons
• Enroll him in a 1 week tennis camp
• Provide nature experiences at local parks...

… after which we could return to you $26,968 and one much happier kid!

Each year, The Recreation and Parks Department serves thousands of youth in hundreds of programs.  For more information on youth and teen programs, please call 561-742-6221 or email recdept@ci.boynton-beach.fl.us.
