We host a variety of art/music classescomputer courses, driving classes, and fitness opportunities.

Registration: All seniors, 55 and older, must register at the center and obtain a picture ID that must be worn while in the Senior Center.  Registration for residents within corporate city limits is free.  For all others (non-residents), the fee is $40 per person per year from October 1 - September 30. Registration takes place on Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.

Transportation: The Mae Volen Center provides transportation for seniors age 60 and up.  There is no charge for rides to meal sites.  Before your first ride, you must register by calling the Mae Volen Transportation Office (736-3820).  The call will take about 10 minutes. Be prepared to provide information about yourself such as your name, address, and phone number.  Once you have registered, you must call one working day in advance for your appointment before 3 p.m.  The best time to call is between 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. 

The transportation fee is $3.00 one way, $6.00 round trip.  Trips can be scheduled for grocery shopping, the mall, the bank, or the library.  Transportation can also be arranged to take you to your physician’s office.

Palm Tran also provides transportation for seniors.  Seniors must apply individually to be able to qualify for Palm Tran Connection; and they must also have documentation from a doctor which verifies their disability.  Once they qualify, Palm Tran will pick up door to door.  Seniors without a disability do not qualify for service.

Congregate Meal Program - #742-6574
(Sponsored by Mae Volen, State of Florida, Department of Elder Affairs & Area Agency on Aging)
To be included in this lunch program, seniors (ages 60 and older) must sign in or call before 11:00 a.m. on the day before they plan to eat at the center.  The program takes place Monday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  Donations are greatly appreciated.  No lunch is served on City holidays.


 

 

 

 

COMPUTER CLASSES

Intro to Computers
These classes will help you understand how a computer works, why you need one and how or where to buy one. Learn the keyboard, mouse skills and how files are created and saved. No prior knowledge needed!

Computer Basics I
You will get comfortable with a computer and get down to basics using Windows. Intro to Computers is a pre-requisite.

DRIVING COURSES

Metro Traffic Council Driving Class
The National Safety Council is offering a driving class for seniors 50 & older. Refresh your driving skills with this informative program. For more information, call N.S.C. at 1-800-392-5101.
Instructor: Barbara Zengage
Days: Second Monday of each month
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Fee: $12 payable to The National Safety Council

AARP 55 Alive Safe Driving Class
Defensive driving program for seniors 50 and up.

Fee: $10 payable to AARP
Wednesday & Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

FITNESS

Fitness Room
All seniors must complete a registration packet, bring doctor's approval and meet with Dr. Jeffrey Hoffman to set up a proper individualized program.
Equipment: 2 treadmills, two recumbent bicycles, a six-station universal gym.
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
