Who We Are:
The City of Boynton Beach Recreation & Parks Department maintains and operates more than 38 sites for recreational use.  At the head of the Department is the Director who reports to the Assistant City Manager.  The City Commission appoints a Recreation & Park Board of 7 members and 2 alternates.  The Board meets monthly providing valuable citizen input to the department's management.  Board members are appointed to three-year terms.

Nationally Accredited:  On November 2, 2011, the City of Boynton Beach Recreation and Parks Department received national re-accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). This distinguished accomplishment was announced in Atlanta, GA at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Annual Congress.

The re-accreditation process is extensive and took place during the entire 5 year period after the Department was first accredited in 2006.  After the initial re-accreditation application was completed, the agency completed a comprehensive self assessment report, which required that we examine and analyze all aspects of our operations.  Finally, a site review was conducted by a team of experienced professionals from around the country representing CAPRA, and re-accreditation was formally conferred by the Commission just last week.

Three employees posing with CAPRA accreditation awardsNational accreditation requires recreation and park agencies to respond to 144 standards representing elements of effective and efficient recreation and park operations.  To become accredited, agencies must demonstrate their ability to meet 36 fundamental standards and 85% of all other standards.  The City of Boynton Beach met all required standards and 140 or 97% of total standards.

The conferral of re-accreditation makes the City of Boynton Beach Recreation and Parks Department only one of 23 agencies in the state to have gone through the process and received national accreditation. Nationwide, less than 2% of park and recreation agencies are accredited; Florida leads the nation in accredited agencies and is proud to share this good news to our citizens.

Our Service Area:  The Department serves 65,000 residents of Boynton Beach, as well as thousands of county residents, seasonal residents and visitors to the city each year.

Our Facilities: The Department operates 8 recreation centers, 29 parks, one swimming pool, the municipal beach, hundreds of youth, teen, adult and senior programs and a core volunteer program with 70 volunteers.  Professional, dedicated staff members manage the year-round recreation programs and activities and maintain parks and open spaces for the enjoyment of people of all ages and abilities.

Strategic Plan: While it is difficult to place a precise value on our parks and open space systems, it is proven that they provide a variety of benefits that contribute to the "livability" of our city.  Copies of the Strategic Plan can be made available to the public by contacting the Department.
