The manatee needs a NAME and a HOME!
Won't you please help?
The Manatee sculpture was on display in the City’s Art in Public Places 2009/10 “Avenue of the Arts” Program. The Arts Commission recommended this sculpture be purchased once funding becomes available. Help us to find a home for the manatee in the City so it can educate everyone that visits it the direct effect the environment has on our marine life. The artist created this sculpture to remind us manatees are endangered and about our relationship to the creature and its natural habitat.
Fund the sculpture by donating to the purchase of this artwork and find a home for the manatee sculpture. Simply download and fill out the donation form below, which is also available in the CIty Hall lobby, and submit it to the cashier at City Hall. Or you can mail it (check only) to the address on the form. Name the sculpture. If you would like to name the manatee sculpture, write the name on the form (also available in the CIty Hall lobby) and give it to the Information Desk attendant in City Hall Lobby. Or you can mail or email it to colesdobayd@bbfl.us.
The Manatee sculpture was created through a joint effort of the Project Reef Keeper, The Center for Marine Conservation and artist Rick Beau Lieu. The idea was to create sea creatures out of repossessed metal that had been associated with environmentally hazardous material; oil sludge in this case. The artist remove the sludge and sent it out for reprocessing to collect any soil contaminated during the process and likewise treat it. Rick built three of seven marine sculptures using this material.
