PROJECT: CRA Beautification Project. "Postcards from Boynton"
HOST: Community Redevelopment Agency and City of Boynton Beach Art In Public Places
DEADLINE: March 7, 2008
PURPOSE: To beautify exposed dumpsters within the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency's district by painting murals on them.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The City of Boynton Beach's Art in Public Places is working with City's Public Works Department and the Community Redevelopment Agency to improve unsightly trash receptacles in the CRA district. AIPP will invite artists to submit an application and a color concept on specific subject matter to be painted on new trash receptacles that are currently not required to be in enclosures. This program will provide an opportunity for artists to add public art experience to their resume and work in the public realm.
Theme: "Postcards from Boynton" Simple, colorful Florida related fauna and flora, marine, nautical, tropical flowers, sunsets, sunrises, tropical trees, birds, animals. Could be similar to the kitschy tourists postcards from the 50's & 60's. Images MUST be simple to have visual impact.
ART LOCATION: Community Redevelopment Agency district in City of Boynton Beach (Access map on web site www.boyntonbeachcra.com) Specific locations will be determined on a case by case basis
SPECIFICATIONS: 1. New dumpsters are to be painted on all four sides. 2. New dumpster sizes range from 88 sq. ft. - 149 sq. ft. 3. Indicate on application how many new dumpsters you would like to paint. 4. The artist is compensated $500 per dumpster to paint all four sides, no matter what size dumpster. 5. One-half deposit to begin, with balance upon mural completion and selection panel approval. 6. Non-returnable color concept of theme subject matter on template supplied (1/2"=1' ratio). 7. Opportunity for; established or emerging artists, with or without public art experience. 8. Artist to supply materials; mural paint, cleanup and painting materials (brushes). 9. Artist to use severe weather latex water-based house paint for dumpster murals. 10.City AIPP will supply the primer and clear coat. 11.Artist will apply primer, paint mural and clear coat to brand new dumpster delivered from factory. 12.Painting will occur at Public Works facility ONLY in Solid Waste/Streets Bay at 222 NE 9th Avenue, Boynton Beach, Florida during city business hours. 13.The work is expected to be completed in a one week time frame during Public Works facility hours: Mondays - Fridays 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., closed on Saturday. 14. Artist to sign an agreement and city insurance waiver to work on City property.
BUDGET: $ 500.00 per dumpster The budget is per dumpster mural. Multiple dumpster murals can be requested.
ARTWORK SELECTION PROCESS: Artist applications and concepts will be reviewed by a selection committee. After the finalists have been selected the selection panel will match the artist's concepts to site specific dumpsters. Artists will be notified of schedule and number of dumpster murals to paint. Selection panel will compare completed murals to concepts submitted prior to approval.
